PermaPorch Railing – Installation Instructions

WOOD PORCH POST AND STAIR PARTS

A. WOOD PORCH POST INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Storage of post must be in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Storage on a porch or under plastic outdoors will void the warranty. Post must be primed and painted prior to installation for warranty to be valid.

2. Before installing, paint the entire porch post with one coat of oil or alkyd based primer, followed by two coats of oil or alkyd based exterior paint. NOTE: The top and bottom ends of the porch post must be primed and painted.

3. Post may need filling and sanding before painting

NOTE: It is extremely important that the wood is completely protected from moisture before and after installation. To properly seal the wood, use only oil or alkyd based finish paint. Priming does not protect it from moisture.

4. If the porch post is trimmed to length, the ends must be sealed with a wood preservative or water sealer, before following paint instructions. This will help prevent moisture cracks and premature decay or rot.

5. It is required that an aluminum plinth be used at the bottom of the post for added protection. Failure to use an aluminum plinth will void the warranty.

6. After installation, paint the porch post with one final coat of oil or alkyd based exterior paint. NOTE: Deck stains and wood preservatives alone are not sufficient for moisture protection. Failure to prime and paint with oil or alkyd paint will void the warranty.

B. ALUMINUM PLINTH ASSEMBLY:

1. Install non-corroding dowels into the floor. These dowels should fit in opposite corners of the plinth and will prevent the plinth from moving laterally.
2. The porch post must be attached to the plinth as follows:
A. Center the plinth over the end of the porch post.
B. Locate the pre-drilled hole in the plinth. Using these holes as a guide, drill pilot holes on the porch posts.
C. Attach screws through the plinth into the porch post
D. Place the porch post with attached plinth over non-corroding dowels.
E. Holes may be pre-drilled through the top of the porch posts for a toe nailing type attachment.

C. WOOD LAMP POST INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Prime Lamp Post with one coat of oil or alkyd based primer, then paint with two coats of oil or alkyd paint. Makes sure to let paint cure.

2. The end grain of the amp post MUST be sealed with a waterproof exterior sealer. (Example: Asphaltum, Cuprinol)

3. Determine the desired depth for the lamppost placement in the ground. Excavate the hole to the desired length.

4. Mix and pour concrete into hole, then place painted post into concrete. Center and level the post. Make sure to brace the post and let it set. Perform routine maintenance as needed.

5. Lamp Post carry a limited one-year warranty if installed correctly.

NOTE: Deck stains and wood preservatives alone are not sufficient for moisture protection. Failure to prime and paint with oil or alkyd paint will void the warranty.

D. WOOD STAIR PARTS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
(Spindles, newels, handrail, shoe rail, and ball tops.)

1. Storage of stair parts must be in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Storage on a porch or under plastic outdoors will void the warranty. Stair parts must be primed and painted prior to installation for warranty to be valid.

2. Before installing, paint the entire stair parts with one coat of oil or alkyd based primer, followed by two coats of oil or alkyd based exterior paint. NOTE: The top and bottom ends of the stair parts must be primed and painted.

3. Stair parts may need filling and sanding before painting.

NOTE: the fillet must be used on all hand and shoe rail.

NOTE: Deck stains and wood preservatives alone are not sufficient for moisture protection. Failure to prime and paint with oil or alkyd paint will void the warranty.

PERMAPORCH RAILING KITS

PermaPorch Railing can be purchased in kits or by individual piece. Either installation must have top rail wood insert, balusters, bottom insert, fastening
kit and support block. Balusters are precision trimmed in lengths of 32 or 36.See Note #2 below for suggested top rail heights.

You must have one PermaPorch Railing Kit and one box of balusters to install one eight-foot section. See Note #1 Below.

Trim balusters to adjust top rail height as needed.

Measure opening where PermaPorch Railing is to be installed. Trim top and bottom PVC rails to length. If using PermaCast columns, take measurement from top rail and bottom rail.

Trim wood inserts 1/4″ shorter than PVC rails. (PermaRail fastening kits are 1/8″ thick. One for each end)

Prime all ends of wood inserts with oil-based primer. Attach top and bottom rail fastener (with included screws) according to instructions.

Measure the center point of top wood insert and bottom PVC rail and mark.

Place baluster at center point and screw through bottom PVC rail into baluster. Continue attaching baluster to bottom PVC rail.

Decide the desired width between balusters (check local building codes, maximum 4″ is standard). Attach balusters using #10, 21/2 galvanized deck screws, to top wood insert starting with center baluster. See Note #3 below.

Apply non-acetone based construction adhesive to bottom of wood insert and place into bottom PVC railing.

If length of rail section is over 4′, you will need to install support block. Mark center point of rail section under bottom rail and drill 3/4″ hole into wood. Apply non-acetone based construction adhesive on end and insert into hole.

If using Savannah top rail, slide over top wood insert. Place rail section into position and attach with installation brackets.

Standard top rail can be attached using non-acetone based construction adhesive and 1″ galvanized deck screws. Savannah top rail does not require adhesive or screws for attachment. Caulk ends of rail.

Note 1:
PermaPorch Kit includes: top rail (Savannah or Standard), top wood insert, bottom rail, bottom wood insert, support block, touch-up paint, installation kit
and all screws needed.
Note 2:
Top rail height:36 ,39 ,42 ((consult your local building codes)
-Add height of bottom rail to height of top rail 3 3 ⁄8 ((bottom rail)+1 1 ⁄4 ((top rail)=4 5 ⁄8 height..
-What distance do you want the bottom rail off of the floor? (consult local building codes.3 maximum))
-Add these amounts to the length of the baluster for overall height of the rail.
-Example:4 5 ⁄8 ((top &bottom rail)+3 ((height bottom rail is from floor)+32 balusters ==39 5 ⁄8 height of top rail..
Note 3:
Cut a block the width between balusters and use as a guide.

Preparation Tips:

(1) Check local building codes for: Rail length maximum (PermaPorch Rail maximum span length =8 between support(s), rail height (either 36 ,39
or 42 minimum), space between balusters (4 maximum), space below bottom rail (usually 3 maximum).
(2) First install all posts, newels, or columns. If using HB&G PermaNewels, PermaCast Columns or PermaPosts, consult instructions.
(3) If installing PermaPorch Railing to PermaCast columns, the bases might need to be notched to accept bottom railing.

Painting/Caulking Tips:

(1) Touch-up paint is available as an option, or is included with 8 PermaPorch Railing Kits.
(2) PermaPorch railing is pre-finished with a tough exterior grade coating that is warranted for 10 years against yellowing. When painting is desired,
simply coat with an exterior grade oil or latex paint, following manufacturers instruction. (Do not use dark colors (dark colors are considered any
color that falls within the L values of 56 to 0).L is a measure of lightness of an object, and ranges from 0 (black) to 100 (white).
(3) Caulk ends where PVC railing meets support. Use exterior grade flexible caulk.

Preparation Tips:

(1) Check local building codes for: Rail length maximum (PermaPorch Rail maximum span length =8 between support(s), rail height (either 36 ,39
or 42 minimum), space between balusters (4 maximum), space below bottom rail (usually 3maximum).
(2) First install all posts, newels, or columns. If using HB&G PermaNewels, PermaCast Columns or PermaPosts, consult instructions.
(3) If installing PermaPorch Railing to PermaCast columns, the bases might need to be notched to accept bottom railing.
